My pots are hand thrown, textured and fired in a wood fueled Manabigama kiln to cone 10 – 12 (2400F). The finished pieces are durable and designed for everyday use. The flames and melted wood ash glaze lend the pots a rustic stone-like appearance – mirroring the rich colors of nature.

I was seduced by clay in college but it was in Japan several years later – thanks to excellent teachers and a 7-year apprenticeship – that clay became my life work. For 40 years, with my wife Keiko, clay has been our life, our dreams, the texture of our existence. Clay has molded us.

I took my first ceramics course in college and after graduation in 1969, opened my own pottery studio. Being able to make a living as a potter is due in no small part to my 47-year membership in Yellow Springs Pottery. My work has been for sale here year round and in an attractive setting. The co-op has also provided great friendship and  support.

My pottery career started in 1984 and I have been a member of Yellow Springs Pottery since 1989. I also enjoy playing guitar with friends and hiking in Glen Helen with my husband, dog and parrot!

My earliest memories of pottery are of noticing the form of a pitcher in my childhood home. Color, form and functionality are of interest to me in my work.

My fifty-year career as a potter started in 1969. My current work focuses on growing glaze crystals on my hand-thrown porcelain pieces, giving each piece a life of its own.

My appreciation for nature inspires the designs for my art work. I enjoy finding ways to simplify natural objects by making bold and graphic depictions of foliage, flowers, animals and insects. My terra cotta tiles are then decorated with a wax resist drawing and the glazes pooled into the open spaces. Once fired, the wax burns away leaving the terra cotta line drawing.

For over 35 years, I have enjoyed making stoneware pottery that is visually and tactilely appealing for everyday handling. I use both glazes and colored clay to color my pots. I like thinking that someone who buys my work will want to have it on display when not in use.
